Day 763: Ten Things To Do INSTEAD Of Eating

I find myself often eating when I am bored or procrastinating (among lots of other reasons I eat aside from, ya know, hunger). And so today I wrote this on Facebook and twitter

Then I actually saw my own tweet and took my own advice and cleaned out my bathroom drawer (while my preschooler was taking his bath) and a shelf in a linen closet that, ironically, has zero linens in it! Haha!

I thought it might be helpful to me, and hopefully you too, if I had a list of things that I could reference when all I could do was think about those Big & Chewy Granola bars in the pantry.

So, here ya go!

 

1. Clean Out A Closet – I am finding this very cathartic. It accomplishes something and usually gets you out of the kitchen!

 

2. Write A Letter – Especially if you have an older person in your life that lives in a nursing home… they love “real” mail!

3. Do Some Yoga or Other Physical Activity – I love yoga cause I can do it easily in my home pretty much anywhere, but even going for a walk, hopping on a treadmill, or doing some jumping jacks would be great!

4. Take A Bubble Bath – Yes, they still do make Calgon, so let it take you away… from the kitchen, that is! It’s a great way to relax and get clean!

5. Put On Some Music And Dance! – This is one of my personal favorites! I find a station on Pandora and then just crank it up and get my groove on. (Black Eyed Peas is my personal fav station)

6. Read A Book or Magazine - Rarely do I have time to pull my eyes away from my kids for more than a few moments, but even flipping through the IKEA catalog can give me a brain break from dwelling on chocolate.

7. Give Yourself A Makeover, Paint Your Toes, or Play “Dress Up” - If you’re like me and only put on makeup twice a week (at most) then this would be a special treat and can be kind of fun. Or if you aren’t into the makeup thing, then try on a few “fancy pants” outfits.

8. Memorize Useless (or Helpful) Facts, Scriptures, or Quotes - Snapple caps have a ton of those useless facts (my brother has pretty much all of them memorized), but it can also be neat to memorize a scripture that helps you when you are down and out so that you’ve got it at the ready!

9. Play! - Finger paint, color, bounce the basketball, ride your bike, jump rope. Do something a little childlike… it feels goofy at first but most of the time we tend to slip right back into our little selves.

10. Plan A Vacation – This is kind of like dreaming for some of us, but sit down with a pen and pad and dream out a vacation… who knows, if you win the lottery or get a huge bonus, then you’ll already have a planned vaca all ready!

Day 534: Cookie Dough Doesn’t Care

January At Staff Student Volleyball GameI remember this one time when I was teaching and one of the school board members had a son in my class. His son was failing… badly. He just wasn’t doing work. Nothing out of the ordinary for a high school boy… many of them go through this “phase”. Anyway, the dad started to just go after me in emails that were CCed to the superintendent… it was my fault and all that. And unfortunately he said some really mean things to me: that I didn’t care about my students, that I obviously wasn’t teaching the kids, that I was just giving the kids busy work.

Now, I was one of those teachers that took feedback very seriously. Because, whether any of those things were true or false, it didn’t matter. Perception is reality. And I knew I was teaching the kids. I knew I wasn’t giving them busy work (heck, I didn’t even GIVE homework). Above all of that though, I KNEW that I loved and cared for my students. I mean… just look at the pic above from our Staff vs. Student Volleyball game. Who would dress like that AND fro their hair out AND run around playing volleyball if they didn’t care about the kids?!?!

Oh man… this all just ripped me up inside.

I would have full blown conversations with this gentleman in the solace of my car… things that I WISHED I could say to him but never would. I was sick over it.

The kind of sick you feel when you have the stomach bug… that feeling was in my stomach all. day. long.

Only, what did I do? Did I stop eating because my stomach felt funny?

Nope.

I ate MORE because my stomach felt funny. And food was my comfort.

And I can still remember that I got to the point one day where I, out of desperation, just prayed: God. Please work this out. Give me the guidance to know what to do in order to just make this end peaceably.

Well, I got to school and there was a reply email from the superintendent basically asking “Hey… I believe in you. Just tell me what’s going on here.”

It was like God.

Ya know… the food I was eating couldn’t make that situation dissolve. It couldn’t soothe the emotions of those worried parents. All it could do was make me fatter and sicker.

But God… well, He was Johnny on the SPOT!

I gave my worries and cares to Him and He took care of it. Know why? Cause he CARES about what happens to me.

That brownie. That cookie dough. Those chips.

They don’t care.

POSITIVITY: I am carefree.

Give all your worries and cares to God, because he cares about what happens to you. 1 Peter 5:6-7

PRAYER:

God, Thank you for taking all these burdens that I tend to carry on my own. I love that I can rely on You to watch over me… to be concerned about my little daily life.

Help me to remember over these days and weeks that You want to deal with my stressful situations. Help me to come to you whenever I have some kind of issues that worries my soul. Help me to see a brownie or cookie dough or chips and to think of YOU instead of the non-help that they offer.

You are my help.

Amen!

Day: 315 Hunger Is Hard

I have been becoming more and more aware that I had fallen back into a trap of eating, eating, eating. Eating too much at meals, eating too much for snacks, eating when I wasn’t hungry, eating.

And I’m afraid that I cannot deny that it was a mild case of emotional eating. You see, I’m a beach bum at heart… nice warm weather is the ticket for me. Sooooo, winter is tough on me. And yes, I live in Texas… and some might say that we don’t even have winter, but it’s cold. And that’s all I need to be a little party pooper. I mean… look at this:

40°?!?! And it’s only just the beginning!!! {I’d better watch out or all this cold weather talk is gonna make me want a Snicker’s bar! Ha!}

So, since we are inside an awful lot more that also means that I am in the same room as my kitchen and pantry a lot more. So, I just… eat.

I have really noticed it because the last few days the weather has been decent (actually pretty close to idyllic today) and so I have spent much more time outside. And eating has been sort of an after thought.

I have also been trying to be more aware of what is going in my body. I put on my size 8 jeans on Sunday to wear to church and had to make sure I was wearing a lose-fitting top because I had me a little muffin-top going on there. Like I said on Day 306, not fitting into clothes was simply a “Dangeometer” that indicates that something is off.

Sure enough something has been “off”. And it’s interesting… I just need to be aware… consciously aware, that is… that something is wrong and then sometimes I have the power to fix it. Now, let me be clear that if “I” have any power, it is only because Christ’s power is still in me and the residual effects of having to rely solely and completely on Him for the past… wow, essentially for the past year… are still there.

    To those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:24

But anyway, what with eating meals again (trying to stop the snacky-meals and actually cooking), the weather being nice, and not fitting into my “skinny” jeans acting as an indicator/reminder for me… I have had a pretty good few days. (Hopefully this post doesn’t put a Murphy’s Law curse on me for having said that!)
